PA One Call and Act 287
Pennsylvania requires notification through PA One Call (811) before excavation, with a defined lawful working window and a tolerance zone around every mark. Design-stage notification is also required for many projects. We place tickets, verify marks in the field, pothole inside the tolerance zone with vacuum excavation, and keep the ticket record with the job file — the documentation matters as much as the dig.
PennDOT and municipal right-of-way
Crossings and longitudinal occupancy on state routes require a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit with drawings, insurance, and traffic control that meet PA Publication 213 standards. County and township roads add their own permits. We prepare the crossing detail and coordinate the permit path so the bore is not sitting idle waiting on paperwork.
Ground conditions in northwestern PA
Erie and Crawford counties sit on glacial till over shale and sandstone, with lake-effect frost depth that drives cover requirements and complicates winter excavation. Bores here are planned for shallow bedrock and cobble; hydrovac runs heated water for frozen ground. Farther south toward Butler and Allegheny, competent rock and steep terrain change entry angles and pit placement.
