Hydrovac Cost: Day Rates, Hourly Rates & What Affects Them
Hydrovac is usually sold by the hour, the day, or the hole. Knowing which one fits your scope is the difference between a fair invoice and a surprise.
Hydrovac pricing looks simple until the invoice arrives with disposal, water, travel, and standby on it. None of those are unfair charges — they are real costs of running a vacuum truck — but they should be understood before the truck rolls, not after.
This is how vacuum excavation work is actually priced and what makes one job cost more than another of the same duration.

The three pricing models
- Hourly — best for short, uncertain scopes; typically with a minimum and portal-to-portal travel
- Day rate — best for a full day of potholing or crew support; predictable and usually the better value past a few hours
- Per test hole — best for a defined design/SUE list where the count is known and each hole is similar
What moves the number
- Depth and soil — deep exposures in hard clay or frozen ground take multiples of the time a shallow sand hole takes
- Number of holes and how far apart they are — setup and tear-down repeat at each location
- Spoil disposal — volume, material classification, and haul distance to an accepting facility
- Water supply — availability of a nearby fill point versus hauling water to site
- Access and traffic control — right-of-way work with flaggers costs more than a hole in an open field
- Restoration — a core-and-patch in asphalt is a different closeout than backfilling turf
- Standby — a truck held on site waiting for another crew is still an operating cost
Where hydrovac saves money
The comparison that matters is not hydrovac against a shovel — it is hydrovac against the cost of a utility strike. A struck fiber trunk means an outage and liability that dwarfs a day rate. A struck gas main means an evacuation and an incident investigation. On any excavation inside a tolerance zone, vacuum excavation is the cheap option, and it is the one an insurer and a regulator will both expect to see.
Getting an accurate hydrovac quote
- Number of excavations and their approximate depths
- Soil conditions, and whether frost is expected
- Location type — open ground, shoulder, active roadway, or parking lot
- Spoil disposal expectations and any on-site disposal option
- Water fill availability near the site
- Restoration requirement at each excavation
Is hydrovac billed portal to portal?
Travel is normally part of the price — either inside a day rate or as portal-to-portal hours. Ask which; a low hourly rate with long unpaid-looking travel is not actually a lower price.
Who pays for spoil disposal?
Our quotes state it up front. Disposal cost depends on volume, material classification, and haul distance, and it should never be a line item you first see on the invoice.
Is a day rate cheaper than hourly?
Usually, once the work exceeds roughly half a day. If you have a list of test holes, a day rate or per-hole price is almost always better value than the clock.
