HDD Cost Per Foot: What Drives Directional Drilling Pricing

Cost per foot is the last number to look at, not the first. Here is what a real directional drilling quote is actually made of.

Every buyer wants a per-foot number, and every honest contractor hesitates to give one — because two crossings of identical length can differ several times over in cost. A 200 ft bore of 2" conduit through clay in an open field, and a 200 ft bore of 8" pipe through sandstone under a state highway with six utilities to expose, are not the same job.

The seven cost drivers

  • Product size — reaming to 8" moves far more material than reaming to 2", and pullback tension rises with it
  • Crossing length — but with a large fixed setup cost, so short bores cost more per foot than long ones
  • Ground conditions — rock, cobble, and running sand each carry their own tooling and production penalty
  • Potholing — every existing utility crossed must be exposed first; the count drives a real line item
  • Permits and traffic control — HOP/ODOT/NYSDOT permits, flaggers, and lane closures can rival the drilling cost
  • Restoration — asphalt and concrete patching, topsoil, seed, and turf on finished property
  • Access and mobilization — where the rig can set up, how far it travels, and how many mobilizations the schedule forces

Why short bores cost more per foot

Mobilization, ticket placement, potholing, pit excavation, traffic control, setup, tear-down, backfill, and restoration all happen whether the crossing is 60 ft or 600 ft. On a short crossing that fixed work is spread over very little footage, so the per-foot figure looks alarming while the total price is entirely reasonable. Comparing a 60 ft driveway bore to a mainline per-foot rate is a bad comparison.

Where cheap bids hide the money

A bid that comes in far under the others usually excludes something: potholing (billed later as extra), rock (a contingency you will pay on a change order), restoration (someone else's problem), traffic control (yours to supply), or as-builts and documentation. Ask each bidder to state, explicitly, whether potholing, rock, restoration, traffic control, and as-builts are included. The spread usually collapses once the exclusions are on the table.

How to get an accurate quote fast

  • Crossing length and what is being crossed (road class, driveway, stream, rail)
  • Product type, size, and duct count
  • Known soil or rock information, or existing boring logs
  • Number and type of existing utilities along the alignment
  • Who supplies permits, traffic control, and restoration
  • Site access and any schedule or work-window constraints

Is boring cheaper than open-cut trenching?

Under a paved road, usually yes once saw cutting, spoil handling, stone, compaction, permanent patch, traffic control, and pavement warranty are included in the trench price. In open ground with no surface to protect, trenching is often cheaper.

What causes change orders on a bore?

Unforeseen rock, unmarked utilities discovered during potholing, permit conditions that appear after bid, and restoration scope that was never defined. The first two are managed by potholing and geotech review; the last two are managed by writing them into the contract.
