What to Expect on an HDD Bore: Plan, Permits, As-Builts
If you are specifying or buying a directional bore, this is the sequence a competent crew follows — and the paperwork you should insist on at the end.
Owners, engineers, and general contractors are often asked to approve directional drilling without a clear picture of what happens between the purchase order and the finished crossing. This walkthrough covers the sequence, the failure modes, and the deliverables that prove the work was done right.

1. Locates and field verification
A one-call ticket is placed and the statutory waiting period observed. When marks arrive, they are walked and compared to records. Marks are a horizontal approximation inside a tolerance zone — they are never a depth, and they are not a guarantee that everything underground is marked at all.
2. Potholing every crossing
Each facility the bore will cross is exposed with vacuum excavation and its depth, offset, size, and material recorded. This is the single step most often skipped on a cheap bid, and it is the step that prevents the strike. Insist that it be a line item you can see.
3. The bore plan
Entry and exit points, entry angle, rod-by-rod profile, minimum cover, bend radius, and clearance from every potholed utility are worked out before drilling. Fluid volumes and annular pressure are checked against the soil so the bore does not fracture to the surface. On sensitive crossings this plan should be submitted for review.
4. Pilot shot and tracking
The pilot is drilled and tracked with a walkover locating system, logging depth and pitch at every rod. That log is how anyone verifies afterward that the crossing actually held the profile it was supposed to.
5. Frac-out prevention and response
An inadvertent return — drilling fluid surfacing — is the main environmental risk on a bore, and it is most likely at shallow depth, near stream banks, and in fractured ground. Prevention is realistic depth, controlled pressure, and staged pullback. Response is containment staged before the pilot starts and a written plan the crew reviewed at the tailboard. Ask any bidder what their response plan is; the answer tells you a lot.
6. Reaming, pullback, and restoration
The hole is reamed to accept the product bundle with adequate over-cut, and the product is pulled with controlled tension and swivel protection. Pits are then backfilled in lifts, compacted, and the surface restored to the permit's requirement.

- Rod-by-rod bore log with depth and pitch
- Pothole records with depth, offset, size, and material per utility
- As-built drawing in your required format
- Photographs of pits, product, and completed restoration
- Locate tickets, permits, and daily reports
How long does a typical crossing take?
A single road or driveway crossing in soil is commonly potholed, drilled, pulled, and restored within a day. Rock, long mainline pulls, and restricted work windows extend that, and the schedule should say so before the work starts.
What should I include in a bore specification?
Required minimum cover, potholing of all crossings, tracked pilot with a logged profile, a frac-out prevention and response plan, restoration standard, and the as-built format and deadline. Those six items eliminate most bore disputes.
What are the warning signs of a bad bore contractor?
No potholing line item, no bore log offered, no frac-out plan, vague restoration scope, and a per-foot price quoted before anyone has asked about ground conditions.
